Don’t give up!!
Recently I had an experience, which at the time was very frustrating! When you are breeding cattle you cannot choose when you are going to do your jobs, if it needs to be done you just do it.
The particular day was a hot Sunday afternoon. We had a small number of weaners (young cattle) that needed to be brought into the yards and vaccinated. It should have been a 10 to 15 minute job to get them into the yards. However, after seven attempts and two hours of riding around we (my two boys and I) finally got them into the yards. We kept trying different strategies until we were successful. I was hot and cranky and the boys were tired and hungry but we achieved our goal!
The next day I thought about what had happened and what I had learnt? The lesson is, whatever your goal is, don’t give up! It does not matter whether it is in primary production or business it is pretty simple:
- Set a goal or goals
- Map out your strategies and processes on how you plan to achieve your goal
- Give yourself a timeline that is achievable
- Start the process of moving towards your target.
You may have to change your plan several times and your time frame might get changed as well but if you keep going you can achieve what you want. I thought it would only take 10 to 15 minutes to get these cattle in but it took much more. We had to go around through three paddocks to change our entrance to the yards instead of walking them straight up the fence in their paddock and into the yards.
Since this day, we have had to get them in again. This time I asked a friend to help us. We got the cattle in the yards in about 20 minutes and the horses did not get out of a walk. So, another lesson is that sometimes you just have to ask for help to achieve what you want to. It is great being able to say’ “we do everything ourselves” but if you can save time there is no harm asking for help or assistance.
So, no matter how large or small your goal, if you do not achieve on your first attempt:
- look at what else you can do
- is there another way or process to get to where you want to be
- who can help
- do you need other resources
- is my time frame accurate or are you being realistic about the time you thought it would take
- think outside of the square if needed.
Most importantly, if it is something that you need to do to grow and be successful, DO NOT GIVE UP!! There is always a solution to every problem.
