Are you a slave to your inbox?

I don’t know about you but my inbox is currently ruling my day! I get a constant stream of little pop up boxes on the bottom right hand side of my screen with every new email. It feels like my inbox is mocking me with “ha ha ha here is another email you need to deal with”.  If you are like me, it’s time to take over the inbox! Here are some tips I found to help…

Make folders and rules– Making folders is a great way to prioritise your emails. If there is something that can wait until later, move it into a folder – name it something like “to be actioned” and make time later to deal with those emails. Making rules for your emails is also a great way to divert emails to those folders so you don’t have to do it manually. Create a reading folder for all regular newsletters and information that you can come back to at another time, a personal folder for family and friends emails to go straight to, just to name a few.

Remove yourself from email lists – You may have subscribed to email lists a long time ago and now the content is irrelevant. Remove yourself from these places to reduce the amount of traffic. There is plug-ins that can help with this aswell.

Step away from the inbox – This is a daring way to stop distractions by emails but one many business owners are doing. The aim is that you decide when you want to deal with emails by not opening the program at all. If something is urgent, majority of the time the person will phone and not email. Also turn off the notifications from your smart phone too!

So all of these things take time but imagine the time you will save and the work that can be completed when you aren’t constantly interrupted by emails or the “ding” on your phone when you have a new email. It’s time to take back the power from your inbox!
