Social media and recruitment
The party you went to last week was a blast. Sure you might have had a little too much to drink and made a spectacle of yourself by streaking down the road but it was all in good fun. “YOLO” you tell yourself. It’s not like it could cost you a job, could it? When it comes to recruitment, employers of today are looking at more than just your presentation during the interview. They are jumping on social media and checking out your profile.
You are looking to secure a job that will make your life complete. After attending an interview, the recruitment manager is having difficulty deciding between you and another candidate. On paper, you both look good and you have similar qualifications but it’s difficult to decide. Now is the time that Social Media paints an image of your true character. Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Tumblr, YouTube and Flickr are just some of the sites that may be visited. Now let’s go back to that hilarious run down the road. Capturing the event on their phones, your friends posted and shared that image and in some cases, video footage for the entire world to see.
And there it is! That lovely shot of your naked body. Maybe the comments lead you further down the path of employment. “Typical Johnno” says one friend. “As least he’s not stoned this time” says another. “Any excuse to get naked” says a family member. Or maybe you respond to these comments with colourful language or threats.
So here are three tips to securing your identity on social media.
- Think about who will see your page. Think about what story it tells about you. Think about removing undesirable friends.
- Change your name to something different. You can do this by adding letters or comments i.e. JJJohnnyy, Johnny Cool, JohnnyJ. This makes it hard for people to locate you unless you want them to have access.
- Secure your account. Go into the settings and find out how to minimise what is for all to see.
And remember, you may think that it’s not likely to cost you a job but all too often it does, it has and it will.
