Cents per kilometre
Now we asked a few weeks ago… “Can I claim my car?”
If you answered yes there are certain ways that the ATO will allow you to claim.
The 1st method is cents per kilometre. This method is based on a set rate per business kilometre with a maximum of 5000km able to be claimed. If you travel more than 5000km in work related travel you cannot claim the extra kilometres if you are using this method.
The ATO has recently changed this method from a rate depending to the size of your car to making a flat rate regardless of the size of the car you use for travel. In the 2015-16 year it is 66 cents per kilometre with the commissioner to determine the rate for future income years.
To substantiate your claim the ATO you do not need written evidence but you will need to be able to show how you worked out your work related kilometres. Recording your business travel in a log book is the best way to substantiate your claim.
