Be aware and take note from a rock star!
On my way to work this morning I was listening to an interview on Triple J with the great Billy Corgan, lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins (not punkins). He is one passionate soul about his industry and rock music. Billy and the band have recently played at the Soundwave Festival which is touring the country, and noticed that in Adelaide they didn’t really get the crowds they were expecting and there seemed to be little excitement for the Festival at all. Now this Festival has a fantastic line up – for anyone who is a fan of rock that is. Which brought Matt and Alex to ask – what has happened to rock music not only in Australia but the wider world? And this is where Mr Corgan showed his brilliance and passion (ok I may be a little biased but I grew up in a time where rock was king – Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chilli Peppers – and the list goes on. I still even have the CD’s!) He believes that artists need to innovate, be that something special, that one of a kind to capture the minds and hearts of the youth of today. If they want to survive and thrive they need to do something different, not vanilla, keep it raw and real. So here we have an intelligent music artist who can see the changes in his industry and the tastes of their consumers, and is willing to try something different to ensure their survival. Willing to take a risk. So why can’t a lot of small to medium business owners?
Changes happen all the time, in every industry. New products, new processes, new ways of conducting business. You need to be aware of this and work with it, not against it. You need to be thinking like a rock star – and not a boring run of the mill, polished pop star. You need to be the one in your industry that stands out, that has that competitive advantage over your competitors, shake your industry up. Be the innovator! Be remarkable and people will seek you out to do business with you. As Billy said, there is only one Slash, only one Kurt Cobain and only one Jimi Hendrix.
